Only a few years ago, it seemed like there was only really one type of milk – cow’s milk. This lack of variety meant that people with lactose intolerance simply couldn’t get by consuming anything with dairy in it. Now, however, there is a plethora of choice which helps those on special diets continue to enjoy recipes using milk by substituting an alternative. Here we look at a few different types of milk and their benefits.

Cow’s Milk

Cow’s milk has been drunk by us for thousands of years and is packed full of essential nutrients for healthy growth. Milk contains high-quality protein, huge amounts of calcium, potassium, and a number of crucial vitamins.

Goat Milk

Goat’s milk is a great replacement for traditional cow’s milk and is made up of different nutrients. Goat’s milk contains different types of fat and protein which can help digestion. Goat’s milk is also far lower in lactose and can be suitable for people with lactose intolerance, however, it won’t be suitable for everyone with this condition as the amount of lactose people can tolerate may differ from person to person.

Plant-Based Milk

There are a number of different types of plant milk to choose from which all have different properties and nutritional values.

Almond

Almond milk is widely consumed and one of the most popular types of nut milk. As well as tasting great, almond milk is low in calories and is packed full of healthy fats which can help people lose weight.

Soy

Soy milk is probably the most common milk substitute and includes a lot of protein, but lacks essential amino acids which must be replaced elsewhere in the diet.

Oat

Oat milk is becoming far more popular and is a great substitute for milk in your cereal or porridge. Although it’s not suitable for those who are gluten-intolerant, it is a great substitute for those without other intolerances. Oat milk provides more vitamin B-2 but is higher in calories and carbs.
