A Brief History of Yoghurt

It could be proposed that yoghurt is one of the most versatile dairy products. Yoghurt can sit perfectly alongside berries, marinate beautifully in chicken legs or even be used as a mac and cheese sauce. At Freshways, we believe the possibilities are endless.

So what is the history of yoghurt and how has it become such a popular dairy product? Find out!

Where did it come from?

Whilst you may assume that yoghurt comes from Greece, the dairy product actually originates from Turkey, where the word itself comes from Old Turkish root ‘yog’ – which means to either ‘intensify’ or‘ condense’. It has been noted that back in the seventeenth century, the Turks only had milk on one condition – it had to be sour. Once the milk was sour, they birthed the name of what they called ‘yoghurd’. This means that yoghurt has been a staple of our diet for hundreds of years!

Health Benefits

Not only is yoghurt extremely delicious, but yoghurt also has a history with health too. In 1904, Elle Metchnikoff promoted yoghurt as beneficial to health and longevity. As a result, this catapulted the dairy product into being used in pharmacies and was even endorsed by John Harvey Kellogg, founder of Kellogg’s cereal! As a result of this, yoghurt then became popular in North America and has been growing ever since. Although Metchnikoff wasn’t entirely correct about the correlation between yoghurt and longevity, we know that yoghurt does itself have many nutritional benefits.

Where is yoghurt today?

In today’s market, consumers have a whole host of different yoghurts at their disposal. The yoghurt aisle now exhibits fat-free yoghurt, low-calorie yoghurt and even Icelandic style yoghurt. There is also the choice to make your own yoghurt at home! Whether it be a chicken korma or a yoghurt cake, yoghurt is so versatile that it can complement so many different meals.
