A Guide to Milk

Whether you add it to your coffee, cover your cereal in it or enjoy a warm glass in the evening, milk is an ingredient that is found in almost every household fridge. Today, there are so many milk options available to suit all palettes and needs, so what do you need to know?

In this blog, we explain some of the most common milk options on the market today.

Cows milk

Whole milk

With all of its fat content remaining, whole milk has the highest fat content, although this is only around 3.35%, and is the thickest consistency wise. This kind of milk is often used in baking as it is less drying especially in cakes and muffins.

Semi-skimmed milk

Semi-skimmed milk is what most people have in their fridge. It has around 1.7% of fat and is made by quite literally skimming of the cream. Because it’s not too thick and not too thin, it makes a good choice for everyday cooking, hot drinks and more.

Skimmed milk

Lastly, skimmed milk has the lowest fat percentage of around 0.1%. It is also good for every day as a healthier alternative to semi-skimmed and whole milk, but may be a little less useful in cooking.

Milk alternatives

Soy milk

Soy milk is a dairy alternative made from soaking and grinding soy beans, and it has been a traditional part of the Asian diet for thousands of years. This plant-based alternative has become popular among vegans and vegetarians as it’s a great stand-in for regular cows milk.

Oat milk

Derived from whole oat grains, oat milk has a creamy taste and is often used in hot drinks. The market is now full of milk alternatives such as oat milk and it’s now an option in cafes and restaurants too.

Almond milk

Another plant-based drink is almond milk. Commercial almond milk comes in sweetened, unsweetened, vanilla and chocolate flavours, and is usually fortified with micronutrients.
