Recent high-fad low-carb diet trends may have you believe that eating a slice of bread is the same as downing a gallon of grease and eating 100 bars of chocolate. However, that is simply not the case. While a diet low in carbohydrates can support some people in reaching a specific weight-loss or fitness goals, eating them every day is not detrimental to your diet in any way shape or form. If you have an allergy to gluten or any other diet intolerances, then, by all means, continue to steer clear of bread. But if this is not the case, go ahead and enjoy a delicious slice of bread however you want it. So without further ado, here are a few of the reasons we adore bread – and why you should too.
Cost-effective and delicious
Bread is highly cost-effective. In the grand scheme of things, bread products are very reasonable. They certainly cost less in cost than meat or dairy. If you’re on a bit of a strict budget, bread fits in perfectly. Bread is tasty and it’s filling and of course, it goes without saying that we enjoy it.
Perhaps carbs in mass quantity aren’t good for you. But, I don’t think we should deprive ourselves of the things we like. For example, bread? Just have it in moderation…just like anything else. Chocolate cake? Perhaps not something to eat every day but certainly something to enjoy a piece once (maybe twice) a week.
Quick and easy meal times
It makes a quick and easy breakfast. If we had to cut out the bread of our lives, I’m sure many of us wouldn’t be too sure what we’d eat for breakfast all week. Of course, there are eggs and meat and veggies and fruit. But obviously, you would get very tired of these things alone all of the time – and bread is so versatile and perfect for any mealtime. Think about it, pitta bread, bruschetta, garlic bread, bread rolls, toasties, the possibilities are endless.
Is there any food product more versatile than bread? You can use it in so many different ways, any time of the day, and it so perfectly with other food items for satisfying and nutritionally-balanced meals. As well as this, it’s perfect in the texture. If you’re pressed for time and need to eat, most bread recipes using this food staple are ready in a matter of minutes. There’s so much you can make including:
Sandwiches
Thrilling fillings and tasty toppings for your bread, wraps, baps and rolls. You really can’t beat a sarnie and this includes classic club sandwiches, baguettes as well as picnic or afternoon tea finger sandwiches. Nothing beats a delicious sandwich for lunch or even a simple dinner. Try a grilled cheese, steak sarnie, tempting toastie or a classic fish finger sandwich. You really can’t beat it.
Puddings
People forget out the versatility of bread, what we mean by this is, it can be used in sweet dishes as well as savoury. Think about a classic bread and butter pudding? This is a simple staple dessert and a much loved classic dish. As well as this. an old-fashioned English bread and butter pudding certainly goes easy on the wallet. Slightly stale bread also works very well in this recipe. Grease a baking dish with butter. Cut the crusts off the bread. Spread each slice with on one side with butter, then cut into triangles. Arrange a layer of bread, buttered-side up, in the bottom of the dish, then add a sprinkle of sultanas. Sprinkle with a little cinnamon, then repeat the layers of bread and sultanas, sprinkling with cinnamon, until you have used up all of the bread. Finish with a layer of bread, then pop to one side.
Warm up the milk and cream in a saucepan over low heat until it reaches the scalding point. Do not let it boil. Crack an egg into a bowl, add three-quarters of the sugar and lightly whisk it up. Add the warm milk and cream mixture and stir well, then strain the custard into a bowl. Pour the custard over the prepared bread layers, sprinkle with nutmeg and the remaining sugar and leave to stand for 30 minutes. Preheat the oven to 180C. Place the dish into the oven and bake for 30–40 minutes, or until the custard has set and the top is golden brown.
French toast
Is there anything better than French toast for weekend breakfast? All you need are slices of bread, soaked in a mixture of beaten eggs with milk and cinnamon, toasted in a frying pan, and served with butter and maple syrup, this has to be one of our favourite, and most decadent, breakfast dishes. This is particularly delicious served with fresh berries and creme fraiche.
Bread crumbs
Do not let leftover bread go to waste! You can make bread crumbs from scratch. Use them as a crispy topping, coating, or mix-in for dishes like breaded chicken, casseroles, or meatballs. Homemade bread crumbs are so simple to make as well! Quite often many of us will find ourselves with a few straggling pieces of bread or chunks from a loaf that my family didn’t eat the previous night’s dinner. This is a perfect opportunity to have an even tastier new purpose by making bread crumbs that can add an extra layer of texture to any dish.
Toast
It has been regarded as one of the go-to remedies for a pregnant woman to ward off morning sickness. Another ideal benefit of this sensational meal? It’s inexpensive – especially when you think about how far it can go. If you pop your bread in the freezer – it’s great for a backup option. But let’s assume you were busy and away for weeks at a time and returned to not-so-fresh bread – you’ve still got your freezer bread.
