There’s arguably no greater joy than sitting down to enjoy a cup of tea and a slice of cake, and while there are plenty of delicious store bought options available, nothing beats a homemade bake. The success of the television show The Great British Bake Off shows that home baking is more popular than ever, but for some it can be hard to perfect. Whether your cakes don’t rise or remain raw in the middle, it can be tricky to produce the perfect bake if you haven’t had much practice. Luckily, there are plenty of easy tips and tricks that can make sure you pull off a delicious result every time. If you want to know more about baking, or have a celebration coming up that requires a tasty treat, see below for our top tips for producing perfect bakes.

Be accurate

There are many recipes when you can afford to be flexible with weights and measurements, but baking is an art where it pays to use the exact measurements and ingredients stated. Some people think that adding more baking powder will make cakes rise better, or swap butter for margarine, but these sort of alterations can change the texture of your cake, or give cookies less crispiness.

Invest in quality bakeware

It’s worth investing in quality trays or cake tins, as flimsy equipment doesn’t conduct heat as well, resulting in sunken or uneven bakes. Non stick coatings can also wear off over time, so if you’re finding that things stick even after lining the tins, it’s probably best to invest in some new ones.

Use room temperature ingredients

Combining butter and sugar is much easier if you take the butter out of the fridge and allow it reach room temperature first, and eggs that are too cold can cause the mixture to curdle. Take what you need out of the fridge for around 30 minutes to an hour before you want to bake, for perfect results every time.

Line tins well

It’s a step not many people enjoy, but it’s important to properly grease and line any baking tins properly to prevent sticking. Use a generous amount of butter or margarine and work into all seams and corners. You can then dust tins with flour, or cut baking parchment to size and place on top of the greased surface for a truly non-stick result.
