Recent Changes in the Dairy Industry and How Freshways Have Responded

As with all industries, dairy farming has changed rapidly over the past 100, 50, 25 and even 5 years. From the rise of wholesale farming to the internet revolution bringing about online shopping, we’ve stayed ahead of the game at every step.

Discover more about how we’ve responded to key developments in the dairy industry and why you should order from Freshways!

Wholesale and Competition

Over the last 25 years, the number of dairy producers in the UK has fallen by two thirds due to the rise of wholesale farming where dairy products are increasingly sold in large quantities for smaller unit prices. This allows retailers to sell these products for a profit margin. At Freshways, we’ve identified this trend and decided to approach wholesale differently and to do it our own way.

Since we began as a small wholesaler in 1990 we’ve expanded to become the 4th largest dairy supplier in the UK. However, we’re completely independent and proud to be family-run at heart. We understand and value the importance of having an amazing relationship with our customers, no matter how big or small.

Online Ordering

Most of our dairy farming competitors are stuck with the old ways of doing things. For example, they still farm their dairy products and sell these wholesale to supermarkets. Instead, we quickly recognised the potential behind the internet revolution; that it would soon change the basics behind buying and selling dairy. If the COVID-19 pandemic has done anything, it’s accelerated the rate at which this transition is taking place.

Thankfully, due to our initiative and entrepreneurship, at Freshways we already have the necessary infrastructure in place to cope with very high demands of online ordering. After all, we’ve been doing it for years! Whether you’re in London or the far north of the country, we can get our fresh dairy products to your door quickly, efficiently and at competitive prices. This is largely because we’ve strategically placed our distribution centres across the country.

Variety

Another key development over the past 50-odd years is the amount of variety that’s available to the customer when they’re buying their fresh dairy produce. There are a variety of brands available, different types of cream, milk and butter, and all of these are available in different amounts.

Here at Freshways, we’ve responded in a number of ways:

  • Different Quantities: Whether you’re after 12 eggs or 15 dozen, we’ve got a range of quantity options to fit your needs.
  • Alternative Formats: We also provide our products in a number of formats. For example, you could opt for wholesale eggs, pre-hard boiled, or even liquid whites if you don’t want the yolk
  • Multiple Brands: We’ve also decided to stock milk alternatives from well-known brands, as well as fruit juices, smoothies, yoghurts and milkshakes – all to lighten your load during your weekly shop.
