Whipped cream has plenty of uses and who hasn’t enjoyed a dollop with their pie or atop an ice cream sundae? If you want to really get creative, however, it’s time to dive into other ways to use this delightful, fluffy mixture.
What Is Whipped Cream?
Whipped cream is simply a thick cream skimmed from milk after it has sat overnight and then has air incorporated. Whipping is the act of incorporating or beating the air into the cream to create a fluffy mixture that consists of cream holding tiny bubbles.
Stiff peak whipped cream is cream that has been beaten until it holds its shape. It’s usually quite glossy by this point, but you need to be careful you don’t overwhip it since it can turn into butter.
Soft peaks will form “hills” when the spoon is lifted out of the whipped cream. This is usually used for adding to desserts and can be a lovely way to enjoy your cream.
Ways to Flavour Whipped Cream
Once the cream has been whipped to soft peaks, you may add your flavouring and continue to beat until stiff peaks form. Alternatively, you can fold in the flavouring.
For sweet flavours, you can mix in powdered sugar to taste. You may beat in any of the following flavours in addition to the sugar:
- Vanilla (seeds or extract)
- Salted caramel sauce
- Peppermint extract
- Lemon zest
- Creamy peanut butter
- Jam
- Maple syrup/extract
- Cocoa powder (add at the beginning of whipping)
- Cinnamon
- Coffee powder
In general, you’ll add 1 teaspoon up to 2 tablespoons, depending on how strong the flavour is.
For savoury whipped creams, try a pinch of salt and then add any of the following:
- Blue cheese (add at the beginning)
- Avocado, blended
- Basil
- Parsley
- Roasted garlic, mashed and blended
- Cilantro
Each of these will create a unique flavour that can be added to your savoury dishes.
How to Use Your Whipped Cream
Once you have your whipped cream beaten and flavoured, how do you use it? You can fill cream puffs, top a cake, add to ice cream sundaes or even make yourself a parfait. Whipped cream also goes swimmingly on toast and waffles.
For the savoury options, try serving with eggs for breakfast, on toast, or with fish dishes. You can also top vegetable salads with a scoop of parsley and lemon whipped cream if you like.
Get creative! There’s no reason not to use whipped cream in far more dishes. It’s a fun way to take your regular dishes up a notch.
